Asian-American woman beaten up on NYC street – Times of India

NEW YORK: An Asian American woman was attacked by a man who repeatedly kicked her as two people nearby who appeared to be security guards did not intervene, according to surveillance footage released by the New York City police. The 65-year-old woman was walking in Manhattan on Monday afternoon when a man came up to her and kicked her in the stomach, knocking her to the ground, the NYPD said. The man then stomped on the woman’s face several times while hurling anti-Asian sentiments at her, police said. He later casually walked away, the footage shows.
The woman is currently hospitalised with serious injuries. The NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force is probing the attack. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said it was “absolutely unacceptable” that witnesses did not intervene. The incident comes amid a national spike in anti-Asian hate crimes, and happened just weeks after a shooting in Atlanta that left eight people dead, six of them women of Asian descent. The NYPD says there have been 33 hate crimes with an Asian victim so far this year. The Biden administration on Tuesday announced a set of steps responding to rising anti-Asian violence, including deploying $49.5 million from Covid funds for schemes that help victims.
