Mobs waving American flag and posters supporting Trump fought Capitol Hill police and broke the security perimeter forcing evacuation of Hill staff and a suspension of a debate going on inside.
“I just had to evacuate my office because of a pipe bomb reported outside. Supporters of the President are trying to force their way into the Capitol and I can hear what sounds like multiple gunshots,” Congresswoman Elaine Luria, tweeted, adding, “I don’t recognize our country today and the members of Congress who have supported this anarchy do not deserve to represent their fellow Americans.”

“Just evacuated my office in Cannon due to a nearby threat. Now we’re seeing protesters assaulting Capitol Police. This is wrong. This is not who we are. I’m heartbroken for our nation today,” another Congresswoman wrote.
All buildings in the US Capitol Complex were later placed under lockdown following a security threat from Trump supporters, forcing Congress to recess during the joint session to formally count Electoral College votes.
“Please support our Capitol Police and Law Enforcement. They are truly on the side of our Country. Stay peaceful!” Trump tweeted, having earlier fired up the crowd with a rambling speech replete with falsehoods and bogus claims.

The storming of the Capitol, which appears to have been contained at the time of writing, took place even as the Republican Party split on the floor of the Congress, with vice-president Mike Pence and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, rejecting Trump’s effort to steal a second term.
“Mike Pence didn’t have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our Country and our Constitution, giving States a chance to certify a corrected set of facts, not the fraudulent or inaccurate ones which they were asked to previously certify. USA demands the truth!” Trump tweeted as the mainstream Republican Party abandoned him.

Fourteen insurgent Senators and dozens of Congressmen supported Trump’s allegations of election fraud.
Trump and his son Eric Trump publicly pledged before supporters that they would have Republicans who did not support the defeated President “primaried” — i.e defeated in inner party elections. More extreme Trump supporters like his lawyer Lin Wood have called for a more violent end to those who don’t support the defeated President.
In a powerful speech on the floor of the Senate, McConnell broke publicly with Trump saying, “We cannot simply declare ourselves a national board of elections on steroids. The voters, the courts, and the states have all spoken…If we overrule them, it would damage our republic forever.”
