US President Joe Biden reverses green card ban – Times of India

WASHINGTON: US President Joe Biden on Wednesday formally reversed executive orders taken by his predecessor Donald Trump to freeze green card applications and certain types of visas, saying the action did not advance US interests and hurt industries and individuals alike.
“It harms the United States, including by preventing certain family members of United States citizens and lawful permanent residents from joining their families here,” Biden said in a proclamation revoking the measure.
Trump had banned “green cards” for new immigrants and halted temporary work visas for skilled workers, managers and au pairs in the H-1B, H-4, H-2B, L-1 and J categories, arguing the move was vital to safeguarding the US labor market during the coronavirus outbreak.
The pandemic was seen in many quarters as an excuse or cover for measures first enacted by Trump in 2017 with his “Buy American, Hire American” executive order. The was opposed by technology firms, and business groups, including the US Chamber of Commerce and National Associations of Manufacturers, both filed lawsuits saying the policy was detrimental to the country’s economic interests.
Since assuming office, the Biden administration has overturned several of Trump’s anti-immigration policies, including the so-called Muslim ban and a policy that forced asylum seekers to wait in Mexico while their asylum applications are processed.
Separately, the White House has also proposed legislation that would provide an eight-year path to citizenship for most of the 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the US. Critics see the measure as part of Democratic Party’s effort to increase its voter base.
